For electronic dance music, we recommend AKAI MIDIMIX to start, which can be extended with an AKAI APC MINI MKII. The goal is to have a good combination of faders, rotary knobs and a way to launch scenes. If you can find one on the used market, the AKAI APC 40 MKII is the goat, but they have gotten expensive and are prone to some bugs, that are however pretty easy to fix. This in combination with the AKAI MIDIMIX is the ultimate setup for my personal taste.

If you end up using this combo, you will need to shift the MIDI CCs that the MIDIMIX uses, as there is some overlap with the APC 40 MKII. To save you some time, here is a file you can load into it using the free tool provided by AKAI (MIDIMIX Editor) for the MIDIMIX. Now each control surface will have the rotaries sending MIDI data on unique MIDI CC's.

Other very good options are the Novation Launch Control in combination with the Launchpad. A controller like Ableton Push is also a great place to start. For keyboard keys, (a MIDI keyboard controller), we would recommend getting a separate 49 key MIDI keyboard as these are cost effective and offer a better keybed than all in one controllers.

Consider factors like key size, additional controls, and compatibility with Ableton's MIDI mapping. Choose a controller that aligns with your creative needs and workflow preferences.

Setting Up MIDI Mapping in Ableton Live

First, to set up MIDI mapping in Ableton Live, ensure your MIDI controller is connected and recognized in the software's Preferences menu. Understand the types of MIDI messages your controller sends.

Note that the "remote" setting in this window disables the smart functions of the APC line so that you can use the encoders as standard CC controllers. We use this function as it allows us to create a fixed assignment to a parameter which is essential when playing live. One knob per function on a dark stage is a life saver...

Once your controller is communicating with Ableton you can enter MIDI mapping mode by clicking "MIDI" or pressing Command + M, then select a parameter in Ableton Live and move the corresponding control on your device to map them together. Exit MIDI mapping mode and test the controls.

In Learn Mode, Ableton Live simplifies MIDI mapping by allowing users to easily assign parameters to their MIDI controllers with just a few clicks. The easiest way is to locate the plugin you want to automate and hit the arrow down to expand the parameters. If you can’t see the one you want wiggle that knob on the plugin GUI. Now it will show up in the grey plugin area and you can create a set of controls you need. These can easily be mapped and you will retain an overview of what’s what.
